The potential for collaborating with others is one of the most exciting and powerful aspects of the internet. Initiatives such as collective music education blogs, the Vermont Midi Project, The Mayday discussion forums are some different ways of collaborating online. Recently Owen Bradley over at The Digital Music Educator posted about the potential to have students mentored online through distance learning via the internet. The Music Educators Network could easily support an initiative such as this if people are interested. Technology now allows for a music teacher or even an independent student to record a performance, convert the file into an mp3 or aac file, upload it to a blog and wait for a registered participant to listen to the recording and then post feedback. Imagine having students, teachers, and undergrad music education students mentoring younger musicians all through the internet! Leave a comment or send an email (my email is listed in the about section) if you are interested in working on such an initiative.

I have recently been told that my school has been selected to pilot a distance learning project- I blogged about it recently on my site if anyone is interested. The system they will install will carry audio and video at over 1 terrabyte per second!
