I’m currently in Michigan for the first ever International Society for Improvised Music conference. So far the conference has been excellent, bringing together people interested in improvising from a wide variety of perspectives. There are music educators present but there should definitely be many more in attendance. Once I get back home I’ll pull together the notes I have been taking and write about some of the main themes discussed. In the meantime take a look at the ISIM website and consider becoming a member. Also take a look at Eric Edberg’s write up of the conference on his blog. One of the highlights of today was a performance by a group of very talented and eager students from the AACM Creative Youth Orchestra led by Nicole Mitchell. They did a great job and were quite inspiring. If you aren’t having your students improvise, it is never too late to start!
