Does anyone have any students playing the laptop in school music ensembles? It would be interesting to find out how many programs include the use of the laptop as instrument. With more and more musicians such as Ikue Mori using the laptop as their primary instrument it only makes sense to start thinking about how to include it in our music programs. Just as any other instrument, performing the laptop live, requires skills and knowledge that can be developed over time.

The thought of having student laptopists, laptoppers or whatever we would have to call them raises many questions.
How would we integrate the laptop as instrument into school music programs? Would new types of ensembles have to be created? Would/could/should the laptop be introduced into already existing ensembles? Who would write the music for these types of ensembles? Would college music programs start including a laptop studio along with the other instruments offered? What specific skills would need to be developed in order to perform the laptop with expression and musicality? What do you think?
